Hamburg. Lack of understanding is currently beating the HSV bosses. Lack of understanding is currently striking at the HSV bosses after the expulsion of coach Christian Titz – right?
Some fans want to cancel their membership of Hamburger SV, others are calling for a boycott: The dismissal of coach Christian Titz is making waves in the social networks. The tenor is predominantly the same: The decision of the second division football team is wrong. But the HSV managers have done a lot right – an analysis.
Currently, HSV is in fifth place, only two points behind the front runner 1 FC Cologne. In tabular form, the northern lights are therefore not far away from the direct ascent places, but on the pitch the team did not once present itself as sovereign in this season. But all in turn. “Sensation coach“?
Last season Titz took Bernd Hollerbach’s place on the coach’s bench. Titz is described as the “sensation coach of the past season” by an HSV fan on Facebook. Hollerbach let the HSV run up with a chain of five, which inhibited the offensive. Titz changed and let act more courageously. The coach scored 13 points from eight games with the new tactical orientation. A good balance. But Titz would have been a “sensation trainer” if he had saved HSV from relegation.
Another accusation against the HSV bosses is that they should have given the coach more time to develop the young players. After all, the team had the lowest average age (22.9 years) in the entire 2nd Bundesliga. However, a total market value of 56.95 million euros (according to transfermarkt.de) – the second highest value after Cologne – also speaks for a certain quality.

Titz imposed his extremely offensively designed system on the still very inexperienced team without having the corresponding player material. Keeper Julian Pollersbeck was drawn forward as the eleventh field player. Long balls to the front were forbidden. Basically the playful solution is good. The central defenders David Bates and Rick van Drongelen, however, often lost the ball in the structure, Pollersbeck afforded inaccurate passes, which landed with the opponent – recently also in the game against VfL Bochum (0:0). Despite all warnings, Titz remained stubborn and loyal to his system. It was ultimately due to the inability of the opposing strikers that these weaknesses have so far only been exploited by Jahn Regensburg (0:5) and Holstein Kiel (0:3).
Moreover, despite the availability of skilled strikers – Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Jan-Fiete Arp – Titz even let 32-year-old Aaron Hunt play at the top. This lacked on the one hand a real buyer for the flanks from the outside, and on the other hand a playmaker who fed the attack line with passes. Hunt is not a suitable striker. He has neither the speed, the assertiveness nor the necessary header strength.
Directly after the final whistle of the 34th matchday of the past season and the associated relegation into each microphone, the HSV bosses had only given out one route: direct relegation. This claim and the performance of HSV did not go hand in hand in the second league season so far. The coach’s dismissal is therefore consistent and correct.
